When an MBAN 62 of the medical institution 50 is powered on, the hub device 60 of the MBAN 62 connects to the access point with the service area within which the hub device 60 is located. When the hub device 60 establishes a connection to the backhaul communication network 88, the hub device 60 receives the MBAN channel access rules from the MBAN channel management module 114, typically by way of the serving access point of the hub device 60. Also, the hub device 60 receives an initial MBAN priority setting either from manual input or from the output of a CDS engine 94, 110, local or remote. Based on the received MBAN priority and the received channel access rules, the hub device 60 determines a set of MBAN channels on which it can operate and selects one from the set to start MBAN operations on. The hub device 60 reports its MBAN priority change to the MBAN channel management module 114 so the MBAN channel management module 114 can determine the MBAN priority distribution of each of the access points 92.
