The MBAN channel management module 114 receives 160 reports describing changes in MBAN priority, and changes in service area or service zone, from the hub devices 60 of the medical institution 50. Based on these reports from the hub devices 60, the MBAN channel management module 114 determines 162 distributions of patient acuity levels for services areas and/or service zones. An MBAN priority distribution change of an access point or a service zone can trigger the MBAN channel management module 114 to dynamically update 164 the channel access rules for that access point or service zone. The updated channel access rules are communicated 166 to all the hub devices associated with the access point or service zone. Once a hub device 60 receives updated channel access rules, it updates the set of MBAN channels that it can operate on. Also, it checks if its current operating channel falls in the updated set. If not, it selects a new channel from the updated channel set and switches to the new channel.
