In another example embodiment, a method is disclosed for aligning an optical transmitter with an optical receiver for a line-of-sight communications link, wherein the optical transmitter comprises a laser array emitter, the laser array emitter comprising a plurality of laser emitting regions, wherein each of a plurality of the laser emitting regions is configured to emit laser light in a different direction such that the laser array emitter is capable of emitting laser light in a plurality of different directions, the method comprising (1) selecting a laser emitting region of the laser array emitter, (2) emitting laser light from the selected laser emitting region, (3) detecting whether the emitted laser light from the selected laser emitting region is received by the optical receiver, (4) determining whether the selected laser emitting region is in alignment with the optical receiver based on the detecting, (5) in response to a determination that the selecting laser emitting region is not in alignment with the optical receiver, repeating the selecting, emitting, detecting, and determining steps with respect to different laser emitting regions of the laser array emitter until an alignment of a laser emitting region of the laser array emitter with the optical receiver is found, and (6) optically communicating data from the optical transmitter to the optical receiver via the aligned laser emitter region.
