In other regimens the subject may be asked to self-administer the tone therapy twice or more per day, for example twice, three times, four times, 5 times or six times.
In other regimens the subject may be asked to self-administer the tone therapy hourly throughout the waking day, or at another interval such as 2-hourly or 3-hourly.
Alternatively, in other regimens the subject may be asked to self-administer the tone therapy at night, immediately prior to sleeping, and to continue the treatment through the sleeping period.
In some embodiments, the playback device may be programmed to switch off after a certain time has elapsed, for example after a set time such as after 30 mins, 1 hr, 2 hr or 3 hr.
In some embodiments, the playback device may be programmed to adjust the amplitude of the signal over a period of time, such as to reduce the volume gradually over a period of, for example, 1, 3, or 3 hours.
In another embodiment, the invention encompasses a method for treating tinnitus comprising subjecting a subject having tinnitus to a sound, whereby the following steps are performed:
Providing a subject suffering from tinnitus and
1—providing to the subject a tone at a frequency of 9397 Hz (+/?1.0 Hz) for between 3 and 10 seconds
2—grading the tone by the subject as either higher or lower in tone than the perceived tinnitus tone
3—adjusting the tone either up or down by one octave
4—grading the tone by the subject as either higher or lower in tone than the perceived tinnitus tone
