摘要

When mobile terminated devices sleep, the devices might not be reachable when needed, for instance when the device is a recipient of data from a third party server. As described herein, a third party application server may inform the network that it has data to send to a particular UE or group of UEs. In an example, the mobile core network (MCN) may use information from the third party server to ensure that the UE is awake when it needs to be. For example, a given UE or group of UEs can be prevented from entering a sleep state before a data transfer is completed.

Referring also to FIG. 8, steps 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of FIG. 9 are described with reference to FIGS. 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of FIG. 8, respectively. In some cases, when the SCS/AS configures a monitoring event or makes a data delivery request, the SCS/AS may provide an estimate of how long it will need to prepare the data transfer after receiving an indication that the recipient UEs are available. The MME can use this information to determine how long in advance of the UEs becoming available to send the availability indication.

In an example, an SCS/AS and SCEF may request that it be notified when the UE becomes available after delivery of a packet fails. This is described above. In some cases, the UE may only be awake for a short time period. It is recognized herein that if the 3rd party server fails to send data to the S-GW before the UE returns to the sleep state, then the data delivery attempt may fail again. In order to help handle this situation, in accordance with one example, the SCS/AS and SCEF are allowed to configure this notification so that it will not clear until a MT packet is successfully sent. In other words, the MCN (e.g., MME) may send a notification each time the UE becomes reachable until a data packet is successfully sent to the UE.
