A persistent connection, such as a connection based on websockets protocol, may be established between user device and the blackout information server. The status of the connection may be used to restrict access to content. If a connection to a blackout information server (e.g., associated with the content) becomes disconnected, fails authentication, and/or the like, then the user device may block access to the content and/or output alternative content to the user.
