The decoder interprets from a bitstream a reference layer for an enhancement layer (900) and interprets from the bitstream at least one type of prediction applied from the reference layer to the enhancement layer, wherein the at least one type of prediction is a subset of all prediction types available for prediction between layers (902). Then the decoder decodes said enhancement layer using only said at least one type of prediction from the reference layer (904).
Thus, the decoder adapts the decoding process to use only the interpreted types of prediction from the reference layer to the enhancement layer.
