Integrated devices comprising integrated circuits and energy storage devices are described. Disclosed energy storage devices correspond to an all-solid-state construction, and do not include any gels, liquids, or other materials that are incompatible with microfabrication techniques. Disclosed energy storage device comprises energy storage cells with electrodes comprising metal-containing compositions, like metal oxides, metal nitrides, or metal hydrides, and a solid state electrolyte.

FIG. 9A provides a schematic illustration of a section of a multilayer energy storage device 900. Here, alternating electrodes 905 and 910 are connected in a parallel configuration, such that the device comprises a single parallelized energy storage device. For example, every other electrode is electrically connected on a first end, while the remaining electrodes are electrically connected on the opposite end. Other configurations are possible, including series configuration, combined series and parallel configuration, and electrical connections to the electrodes may be made at any suitable position. As illustrated, a first set of electrodes exhibit a first potential (V1), while a second set of the electrodes, interspersed between the first set of electrodes, exhibit a second potential (V2), such that a potential difference between the electrodes is V1?V2. Solid electrolytes 915 are positioned between each adjacent electrode in FIG. 9A.
