When configured as an integration in the portal, the shadow message store sends to the portal a list of the emails that match the cluster from which a shadow search was conducted and identifies the recipient, sender, subject, and receipt date of the emails. In some embodiments, the system can be configured to not transmit the content of the emails to the portal. In alternative embodiments, the content of the emails may be transmitted to the portal only if an authorized user is operating the portal.

In some embodiments, the shadow message store can be placed so as to ingest emails that were actually delivered to Exchange mailboxes, in some cases, emails that made it past the organization's spam filters, anti-virus applications, and other security controls.

Unreported Messages

With reference to FIG. 9, the system described above receives reports of suspicious messages, and can associate them into clusters. The system can also operate on emails that were not reported by individuals. The system can operate as an appliance that runs on an organization's Amazon Web Services (AWS) instance and ingests copies of all email in an organization's Microsoft Exchange and Office 365 environments. When shadow message store is configured as an integration in portal, superusers and operators with the appropriate permissions can search the shadow message store for exact matches to reported emails that are part of clusters in the portal, and quarantine these unreported emails from all user inboxes, directly from the portal. Quarantined emails can also be restored if needed.
