The trust level 454 may be selected from a set of trust levels. In an example, the trust level 454 can be one of a medium trust level or a low trust level. However, other trust levels are possible. The medium trust level may be associated with a verified real person or entity. For example, the telephonic communication received according to the STIR/SHAKEN protocol from a sender may include (such as in SIP header) an attestation level (described below). According to the STIR/SHAKEN protocol, the attestation level may be one of full attestation (i.e., “A”), partial attestation (i.e., “B”), or gateway attestation (i.e., “C”). In an example, the medium trust level may be associated with the attestation levels A and B, and the low trust level may be associated with the attestation level C. In another example, the medium trust level may be associated with the attestation level A, and the low trust level may be associated with the attestation levels B and C.
Full attestation (i.e., “A”) indicates that the originating service provider attests that it is responsible for originating the telephone call, that it has an authenticated relationship with the entity making the telephone call, and that it has established a verified association between the telephone number used for the telephone call and the entity. Partial attestation (i.e., “B”) indicates that the originating service provider attests that it is responsible for originating the telephone call and that it has an authenticated relationship with the entity making the telephone call (but not with the particular telephone number). Gateway attestation indicates that the originating service provider attests that it has placed the telephone call on its network, but it has no relationship with the entity originating the telephone call.
